Microsoft joined the list of companies which are planning to design a smartwatch. The smartwatch market was never taken seriously after 2008 until Apple was rumored to be working on iWatch. This made companies like Samsung and Microsoft to jump into the trend.

For its potential new watch prototype, Microsoft has requested 1.5-inch displays from component makers, said an executive at a component supplier.WSJ posted

Earlier this year, Microsoft asked suppliers in Asia to ship components for a potential watch-style device, the executives said. One executive said he met with Microsoft’s research and development team at the software company’s Redmond, Wash., headquarters. But it’s unclear whether Microsoft will opt to move ahead with the watch, they said.

It’s not that smartwatch market was never explored. Microsoft was the first to enter the smartwatch market in 2004  with Fossil and Sunnto but the device cost went to $800,so Microsoft left the project in 2008 .Since then the smartwatch was never seen as a lucrative one for the companies till Apple got into the development of iWatch.

The advancement in the display technology and touch screen has made possible to build a smart watch which was not much advanced during 2004. Many companies are getting into smart watch development,so we could see some innovative watches in the coming year.
